Conservative commentators like Sean Hannity, Sara Carter and John Solomon, who were written off by the liberal media in 2017 after warning about possible interference at the highest level in the Obama administration, are having their moment in the sun amid the fallout from the Michael Flynn case.
SaraCarter.com resurfaced a May 2017 interview where Carter discussed a troubling trend she noticed along with Solomon, her colleague at the time. It was during an interview on Fox News’ “Hannity”that she called for an investigation into the Obama administration’s “unmasking” of Americans.
At the times, “unmasking” was an esoteric term to many Americans, but recent revelations into the Obama White House’s use of the procedure in the Flynn case has left the former president vulnerable to criticism and has put the president on the offensive.
Richard Grenell, the acting director of national intelligence, last week released the identities of Obama-era officials who may have received reports on Flynn, which led to Trump referring to the alleged cover-up as “Obamagate.”
In the 2017 interview, Carter identified the Obama administration’s “unmasking” of Americans and said, if true, it would “be one of the biggest scandals this country has ever seen.”
“All you have to do is go back to 2011, when they loosened up these rules,” she said. She continued, “And then we see an increase of this. We see slowly but surely an increase of unmasking Americans and leaking information. But what we don’t know Sean, yet, is why. And that’s why this investigation needs to continue.”
Obama-era officials, including Susan Rice, his former national security adviser, have denied any wrongdoing and have insisted that unmasking is a common practice. Fox News, however, reported on another recently resurfaced video that showed a Rice interview on PBS from 2017.
She was asked about what—if anything she knew—about the reports that the Trump transition team was under surveillance before he took office.
PBS anchor Judy Woodruff asked, "In the last few hours, we've been following a disclosure by the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes, that in essence, during the final days of the Obama administration, during the transition after President Trump had been elected, that he and the people around him may have been caught up in surveillance of foreign individuals and their identities may have been disclosed. Do you know anything about this?"
"I know nothing about this," Rice said at the time. "I was surprised to see reports from Chairman Nunes on that count today."
The Fox reported pointed out that a newly declassified email that she sent herself seems to indicate that Rice had some information about the surveillance, which led to Flynn’s unmasking.
Carter, in 2017, said, “We need to know what they were looking at and why. And if they were compiling dossiers on political opponents, that needs to be disclosed. That cannot be held under the shield of classified information.”
